Your Mind

Hey, You: Forget the Haters.

I’m reading Tina Fey’s memoir, Bossypants, for the millionth (ok, the fifth) time, and the following passage really hit me:

“When faced with sexism or ageism or lookism or even really aggressive buddhism, ask yourself one question: ‘Is this person standing between me and what I want to do?’ If the answer is no, ignore it and move on. Your energy is better used doing your work and outpacing people that way. Then when you are in charge, don’t hire the people who were jerky to you.”

In other words: Fuck. Them.

In life, no matter what path you choose, someone at some point is going to try to tell you “no” for some stupid, superficial reason. I know women who were overlooked for jobs in male-dominated fields for being “too pretty,” and others who weren’t hired for “not being pretty enough,” and it frustrates the hell out of me. But the bottom line is, there is always a way around it. Channel your energy into showing whoever is in your way how smart and capable you are, and that you don’t need their permission or approval to succeed.
